Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear, Las Vegas twinkles amidst the sun-freckled valleys of the Mojave Desert. Founded as a city in 1905, the growth of this urban oasis can be credited to the architectural wonder, Hoover Dam. Where the nights camouflage the hours and the sunshine does wash away doldrums, this mirage-like city has billboard signs for skyscrapers. Perhaps awaiting its share of divine retribution, it seems to have a kinship with the biblical places of Sodom and Gomorrah and a counterfeit version of Babylon.

“The entertainment capital of the world” is a city of Tony Curtis and Nicolas Cage, of Elvis Presley and Wayne Newton, of casinos and showgirls, of runaways and transients, of neon and noise, of ruthless ambition and unsentimental pragmatism, of high rollers and The Killers, and of condoned vice and malleable culture. Like a Disneyland for adults, the metropolitan area has more AAA Five Diamond hotels than any other city.

Hollywood movies such as Viva Las Vegas, Honeymoon in Vegas, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Leaving Las Vegas, Ocean’s series, and The Hangover have made a quintessential ode to the city. The countless repetitions in popular culture have added fuel to the notion of “What Happens in Vegas…”

The city is the seat of Clark County in southwestern Nevada near the state borders of California and Arizona.

By Air −

McCarran International Airport (LAS), five miles south of downtown, is an intercontinental gateway to the city.

By Train −

Las Vegas Monorail is a convenient way to explore the tourist attractions along the Las Vegas Strip.

By Road −

Two major freeways, Interstate 15 and U.S. Route 95, intersect in downtown. The I-15 connects the city to Los Angeles in California and heads northeast to Salt Lake City in Utah. Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) provides public transportation in the metropolitan area.

Las Vegas Strip −

As glamorous as the Sunset Strip in LA, this 2.5-mile-long stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard runs northeast to southwest through the city. Whether it’s the volcano and aquarium at The Mirage, the world’s tallest Ferris wheel High Roller, The Auto Collections in The LINQ Hotel, Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, the Fountains of Bellagio, or Bodies: The Exhibition at Egypt-themed Luxor Hotel, off-the-wall entertainment is guaranteed. The strip has over 75,000 miles of neon lights along its overall four-mile length, that’s enough lights to borderline the contiguous United States.

Museums −

Neon Museum preserves more than 150 vintage neon signs in its Neon Boneyard. Discovery Children’s Museum offers interactive exhibits in nine themed exhibition halls which explore art, science, and food. The Mob Museum, Pinball Hall of Fame, Burlesque Hall of Fame, and Nevada State Museum are other prominent points of interest in Las Vegas.

Amusement Parks −

A perfect attraction for all ages, Adventuredome inside Circus Circus is America’s largest indoor theme park. Comprising an area of five acres, it features 25 rides including the Canyon Blaster roller coaster, an 18-hole miniature golf course, and clown shows. Wet’n’Wild Las Vegas − with pools and water slides − is a popular haunt among Las Vegans when the mercury hits 110 degrees.

Things to Do in Las Vegas

If you don’t end up with Mike Tyson’s tiger in your hotel bathroom, you haven’t partied in Las Vegas. With a plethora of entertaining shows, circus acts, activities, and short-lived delights, the city challenges your ability to restrain ravaging desires.

Get your p-p-p-poker face on, let the dice stay hot, spin the roulette wheel, and hear the ka-ching of a slot machine at any casino in Las Vegas, book tickets for Cirque du Soleil shows, get the Fremont Street Experience on a pedestrian-only street in old downtown, and watch a burlesque show at V Theater at Planet Hollywood. For a slightly different experience, enjoy romantic gondola rides at The Venetian and heart-pounding thrill rides at the Stratosphere Tower, rub shoulders with stars in Madam Tussaud’s, hit a target at The Gun Store, and relish breathtaking city vista from a chopper.

Parks and Recreation −

All sorts of outdoor thrills lie only a short drive from downtown: whether it is skiing and sledding at Mount Charleston or mountain biking and zip-lining through Bootleg Canyon. Towards the east, the Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada’s first park, is an ideal destination for RV camping and picnicking. Towards the west, Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area allow rock climbing, horseback riding, and other pursuits.

Eloping −

Summer is the best time to get married and Vegas is the best place. Hell, it’s easier to acquire a marriage certificate in Nevada than getting a driver’s license in other states. If you want a priest, minister, or rabbi to dress up like Elvis, even that can be arranged. Be it a spontaneous decision or a thought-out budget wedding ceremony, there are several wedding chapels in Las Vegas to tie the knot.

Shopping and Dining −

Aside from shopping along the Strip, there are two popular factory outlet malls: Fashion Show and Las Vegas North Premium Outlets. Also, Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood and The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace are shopper’s paradise. Fuzzy dice, dice clock, giant poker chip pillow, and miniature ‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ sign are souvenirs to bring back.

Eating in the buffets of Las Vegas is as customary as gambling. Several themed restaurants lie along the Strip. And with a nightclub or lounge in almost every hotel, nightlife in Las Vegas is simply out of this world, especially ultra pool parties.
